This gorgeous boy was foaled here at Quiet Meadows Ranch out of WPE Night Watch. We were very surprised to see that he was just like his mom; and fell in love with him as soon as we set eyes on him. We decided that we just couldn't let him go. Since then, he has continued to surprise us with a conformation to match his beautiful coat and an attitude to match as well. He is a very sweet but a determined boy who keeps his eye on the ball. He knows when its time to show his best and boy does he bring it!
When he was first starting in training, we thought that he would do well in Dressage and we began to focus his training in that direction. He even participated in a show and did pretty well, but he proved to be too wild for the show ring and began showing us that racing was what he was meant for. As mentioned, he has a great personality...when he is doing what he wants. If you try to force him to do something other than what he has in mind, you're in for a world of pain! See below for his more in depth story. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eventually, the time came to retire this fine boy from racing. This particular day actually couldn't come fast enough as I had been anxiously awaiting the day that we could breed him! Now here, Moon has retired with 3 lifetime titles, a total of 111 ES points and a list of mares already waiting to be bred with him. Over all, he did pretty good through out his 2 year racing career and we are very proud to have him at Quiet Meadows Ranch. He produced 9 fantastic foals with several proving to be great racers already. Now, at age 10, he is fully retired and gelded, but just in case, we saved a few samples. He is now enjoying life in the pasture with his close friend, Graphite; where they entertain the visitors with their funny antics. Moon's Story
Full Moon or “Moon” was born here at Quiet Meadows Ranch late one August evening. His dam, WPE Night Watch went into labor and progressed quickly despite this being her first foal. It was clear from the start Full Moon was a special foal, but we had no idea how special until we actually set our eyes on him. It was assumed that the likelihood of Night Watch having a foal that looked like her was so rare, no one dared dream of it, but when his head first appeared, we were all astonished. Cheyenne thought, “ok, it’ll just have more white on its face…” then Night Watch gave that final push and welcomed her first foal into the world. Instantly everyone cheered! It was a fully expressed overo foal and then the level of excitement rose when it was discovered that the scrawny little foal was a colt.
He didn’t take long to get to his feet and find his mother to nurse. Dr. Rowley watched and determined that though he was a thin foal, he would do just fine. It was clear that he was a fighter, though he had some bouts of health issues in the beginning. Soon after birth, Moon developed a bacterial infection. He grew weak and developed a fever but was able to beat it with a course of an antibiotic. For some reason, though they did everything right, the little colt had several infections over the first few months before he kicked them for good. Cheyenne was afraid that one day she would go out to the barn to find Moon lifeless, and even took her time some days just to avoid that possibility. He grew stronger every day and soon the infections were just a bad memory. Night Watch kept a close eye on her son, who now had a healthy curiosity. He left no stone, corner or leaf unchecked and had all kinds of run ins with wild animals wandering past the pasture, even a skunk at one time – that did not end in his favor! Whew! Even with his curiosity, he was a good boy. He listened well and was quick on his feet, agile and moved so gracefully. It was decided that he would be trained in Dressage so that he could show off his lovely gait. At two years old, Moon was entered in his first Halter show, coming in third. He showed well for his first try and Cheyenne was happy with his results. The following year, he was entered in his first Dressage competition. Unfortunately, he did not place and showed signs that he did not have the personality to show in the ring. He was beginning to be a bit of a handful with a pretty good attitude; he wanted to do what he wanted. Soon it became obvious that the once totally obedient colt was changing and before long, his discipline was changed to flat racing…just like his sire. Over the following months, his training was in full force and then, May 2013, he was entered in his first maiden race. That race was not only his first race, but his first win. He broke his maiden easily and moved on to the next level of races. Over the next two years, Full Moon continued to win and before long, he was ranking in the top ten racers. He was a strong and determined horse set on the glory of victory. When he wasn’t racing or training, he enjoyed the life of ease in the pasture with Graphite, another racing colt at Quiet Meadows Ranch. The two have always had a close bond and would often be seen playing and running through the pasture; Cheyenne always enjoyed her visits to the racing barn and watching the two. When Moon saw her, was always quick to come over and sniff at her, looking for a little treat. Cheyenne of course, always had one on hand just for both colts. In December 2013, after two years of racing and at the age of six, Full Moon was retired from racing as a Grade 1 horse with 111 points and a total of $17,770 won on Equus Sims; earning himself the lifetime title of State Champion. We let him enjoy a few days at the racing barn with Graphite before Chuck walked him over to his new home, the stud barn. There he would live out his days playing with the other studs and relaxing in the sun. He did earn it after all. Long before he even retired, Cheyenne’s good fried, Vanessa Blackmore asked for a foal out of WPE Tia Maria sired by Full Moon when the time was right. Tia Maria was the first mare that Full Moon covered; only days after moving into the stud barn. Shortly after that, he covered two newly retired racers, SHS Marilyn M and HPS Dreamcatcher, all resulting in beautifully healthy and happy foals; Meridian Mark, The Nightmare Begins, and With All My Heart. When word got out that he was open for breeding reservations, requests came pouring in. Cheyenne was shocked and excited to see all of the interest in her prized stallion and is eager to see all of the lovely foals and future racers that he will produce. It is now the second season for him, this March 2014 and Moon was booked again for several coverings. One foal has already been born, an adorable colt named Midnight Dream out of HPS Dreamcatcher. Full Moon proved to be too much for the show ring in his younger years and because his level of eagerness has not been dulled, it is unlikely that Cheyenne will try again anytime soon. For now, he will be allowed to enjoy his time playing in the pastures and covering mares; all the good things in life. |
