Journal Entry #3
It’s been a few weeks now since we
brought out little painted colt home. Chuck and I took suggestions from the
staff and came up with the name, Haunted Symphony, or "Echo" for
short. He has grown wonderfully and Sadie has taken to motherhood quite well
with him. She has grown to be very protective of him, like a good mother
should, but I worry, perhaps a bit too much.
We don't have any more horses ready to foal, and the foals we did have, have all gone to their new homes; so we brought Sadie and Echo over to the Stock horse breeding barn. Sadie towers over the other mares, but she is so gentle, she submits more to them than them to her...unless they get too rowdy with Echo. Then, that's another story; she ensures that they know not to be too rough with him. Echo started out a large, but frail foal. I worried for several days about him until we saw him figure out how to run. After that, he showed me that there was nothing to worry about anymore. He was just fine. It was so cute as he first took a little trot across the pasture. His eyes got wide with excitement; then he figured out how to propel himself into the air, jumping around like a bunny in the snow. It was like he was testing himself, how high could he go? Then by accident, he went flying and realized that he was running. He held his head high to let the wind blow through his thin little mane. Sadie watched as the foal ran off some energy. I thought he would do that the whole day, but all of a sudden, she began running beside him tossing her mane in the air and kicking her feet up. It was like she was a foal again too. It was such a sweet moment to witness and something I had never seen her do with her previous foals.
We've been so busy lately with Echo and the racers that we haven't had a chance to get back out to see Millie and Showmane. I wonder how they made it up to the Overlook and if the bachelors gave them any trouble. Millie certainly has to have had the foal by now; her stomach was looking so big. Hopefully she didn't have any problems like Echo's mother did. I would hate to think Millie being in such pain. Tomorrow I will be going over a few things with Chuck and Maryann regarding some breeding plans, I don't know how much I want to do in the next year. Things have been so busy for us all. I will have to see what they think...
